This collection contains photographs taken by Carol Sullivan, an anthropologist, who did extensive research on the American Indian Movement (AIM), especially the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee, at Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The collection contains photos of the occupation, fighting between federal agents and Indians, Onondaga Indians leaving Wounded Knee, and a federal informant. Russell Means, Leonard Crow Dog, Dennis Banks, Billy Lazore, Tom Bad Cob, and Black Elk are among the prominent American Indian Movement figures represented in this collection. The Wounded Knee Trading Post and church are also depicted. An addition to the collection, processed in 2017 contains photographs relating to Wounded Knee; S. Dakota; Mexico (Chiapas, Zapatistas, Day of the Dead). The name of the collection was changed from "Carol Sullivan Wounded Knee Photograph Collection" to "Carol Sullivan Pictorial Collection" in 2017.

Dennis James Banks, also known by his Ojibwe name Nowa Cumig, was born on April 12, 1937, in his grandparents’ home on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota. He was raised by his grandparents, Josh and Jenny Drumbeater, until going to the Pipestone Indian Boarding School at the age of five. There, he experienced physical and emotional abuse and forgot most of the Ojibwe language because he was not allowed to speak it.
